Portals into an Ancient Future
Natural environments shaped the course of our evolution for millions of years. Then, in a few short millennia, we modern humans created a built environment of hard lines and harsh materials that separated us from the living earth – with disastrous consequences for both people and planet.
It's now time to heal that separation and restore ourselves to the circle of life. WyldRooms are designed to support this journey, by fostering a renewed sense of connection and alignment with the natural world.
Wildcrafted with love and raw natural materials
WyldRooms are built with respect for the land and reverence for the circle of life. The main materials used in their construction are raw, natural, genuinely sustainable, and locally sourced.
These include:
Straw-Bales
Straw-bales are an esteemed building material, being super insulative, breathable, fire-retardant, and, being a by-product of cereal farming, carbon negative. Straw-bales are stacked like giant golden building-blocks to form the circular wall of a WyldRoom.
Roundwood
Roundwood is basically a small-diameter tree cut straight from the woodland. Our roundwood is coppiced Sweet Chestnut from lovingly managed woods here in the UK. We use it in the roof structure of WyldRooms, and to create their curvy earth-kissing eaves.
Sawn Timber
Sawn timber is used to create the insulated wooden platform on which the body of the WyldRoom sits, as well as the floorboards and window and door casings. We source our timber from a wind-powered sawmill that cuts sustainably managed larch from local woods.
Lime Render
Lime render is an ancient building material that is natural, breathable, and sustainable. It creates a beautiful and durable cover over the straw-bale wall. We work with expert plasterers to achieve a high quality finish onto which lime-based paints are then applied.
Soil & Plants
Soil and plants are transplanted onto the waterproof rubber membrane which covers the wooden roof structure, to create the green living roof of a WyldRoom. Over time, this naturalises to form a flourishing ecosystem replacing the one displaced by the footprint of the structure.
Harmon Between Inside and Out
When our interior spaces are congruent in both form and substance with the natural environment around them, it helps us to feel a clear sense of connection and belonging to the living world outside. This connection matters, deeply effecting our sense of who we are and our relationship with the circle of life.
WyldRooms are designed to maximise this congruence, to harmonise interior space with the natural environment outside. At the same time, they are cosy, relaxing, homely spaces to be in, and finished to a beautifully high quality.
"My body just feels so good in this space, so relaxed and safe. I feel very held, and at the same time connected to the natural world outside in a way that's both calming and energising. I love it!"
Helen Greenway
"I can rest in here better than in any other space I've ever been in, and it's also where I do my best art. Everyone should have one."
